Jimmy Church interview on July 5 - from Nashville!

Jimmy Church Interview July 5, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpPkB5eT2Vg

July 5, 2012 Interview with Jimmy Church
Conducted by Joe Viglione (JV)

JV: Welcome to Visual Radio, it is Thursday evening, July 5, 2012 and we're honored to have Jimmy Church on the phone.  Hello Jimmy!

JC: How 'ya doin'?

JV: I'm doing well, how about you?

JC: I'm doing good.  Honored to be your guest.

JV: Man, I was looking at your website, you are booked all over creation!

JC:  ...Oldies...I do the old stuff, still do it like I did in 1955, '65 and that's what carries me to this day.
People still like to hear the old music like it goes.

JV:  Do you know how many gigs you've probably performed over the years (both JV and JC laugh)

 http://collectorsfrenzy.com/Details.aspx?id=180575168812

JC: That's hard to say. That's really hard to say.  I wasn't blessed enough to have hit records, so I decided to get the music that the people that never changed, everybody likes the old school music.

JV: They certainly do

1 minute
JC: With that format, I've traveled halfway around the world. Still playing "Mustang Sally" like "Mustang Sally."   You know,  the same way.  By me being 73 I was born and raised during that time, I can still give the same feel that I did in 1965.

JV: Amazing

JC: You know, all the guys... I've been on shows with Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, James Brown...all those guys. And all of them are gone, and I'm still here.   You know, (someone) I was talking about the other day, Bobby Hebb, we were very close.

JV:  Now you know that Bobby was on my third show, August 16, 1995

JC: No, I didn't know that.

2 minutes
JV: Bobby & I had been corresponding by mail, but we'd never met until he did my TV show.

2:06
JC:  Oh, OK.

JV: So that's how I met Bobby in person and then he did a bunch of my shows (2:10)
and I'd go around taping him when he performed live.

2:13
JC: OK, Bobby joined my group after he got out of the service. We were still in high school, 1957.  Still in high school, and Bobby came out of the service playing guitar. Because I saw him when we were younger
...(2:35) his mom and dad used to play on the bus.  You know, they were blind, and he used to play the spoons...we were young... I knew that (2:40)...but...towards meeting him and playing with him in music. He joined my band...well, my group, we had a group called the Five Seniors.  We did a record "Why Did You Leave Me" in 1957 (2:57), did it in high school, Bobby came out of the service...and we were just astonished the way he played guitar.  Man (we were  kids), he played it like   L.Pauling (3:10; Lowman Pauling) of The Five Royals...that was our idol, The Five Royals, we were patterned after them. (3:15)

And we did a little record and traveled, carnivals...and did some (----) Wilson shows, and Bobby played with us.  He's a great guy...man, he wrote a song for me that I went to New York and recorded (3:27) Kenny Burrell was the guitar player, Sticks Evans was the drummer, Mickey & Sylvia were the ones who did the session.

JV: Oh, Mickey and Sylvia did the session?

JC: Mickey, Mickey Baker.

JV: Right.

JC: (3:36) He was over the session, this was in...it must have been '60, no, it must've been  59...58...58...

(4:00)
JV: And what was the name of the song?

JC:  It was on one of those...ah...you know those  albums ...those old hits...those old songs you throw on ...those songs...man (laughs) ..."I Wish"...and I wrote the other side, sounded like a...some kind of (regular) rock & roll song I wrote ...it was on one of those ...back when they had all those songs they put on CD and they sell.

JV: Yep.

JC: It was on one of those things.  (4:34).  One of those, y'know.

4:39
JC: Bobby's words were so strong...
